The team is based in Calgary, Alberta, Canada and is part of the Northwest Division of the Western Conference of the NHL. The team currently plays their home games at the Scotiabank Saddledome (originally known as the Olympic Saddledome) since 1983.  The Flames is the third team that represents the city of Calgary in the major-professional ice hockey sports, along with the Calgary Tigers (1921–27) and Calgary Cowboys (1975–77). The team started playing in 1972 as the Atlanta Flames based in Atlanta Georgia until moving to Calgary in 1980, where they changed to their current name.

In 1988 – 1989 seasons, the Flames grabbed their first and only Stanley Cup Championship title. They have also qualified for the 2004 Staley Cup Finals. In 2011, the team had won the second Heritage Classic outdoor game. The Flames have also grabbed the Presidents' Trophies twice in their history as the league’s top regular season team. They have also achieved five division championships. The team also owns the Flames Foundation where they have donated more than $32 million to charity throughout southern Alberta since the franchise arrived.
